I sometimes use the words “energy” and “soul” interchangeably, especially when I refer to the universe. To be inside the universe is to be surrounded by its soul and therefore submerged within its energy. It is difficult to know where I end and the universe begins. When it comes to energy, it is difficult to know whether endings and beginnings are even possible, since it is in constant flow. In this series of images, I’m interacting with a flow of energy. Each piece becomes the inspiration for the next. Aspects of color, shape, and form drift so they gain or lose visibility as the flow moves from one creation to another. They follow the shape of the energy that exists beneath the manifested layers, which are the finished pieces. However, the term “finished” doesn’t seem entirely applicable.
It could be said that the first piece is a beginning, but it was created in response to faint clay traces left by a sculpture I’d also created. Therefore, it becomes increasingly impossible to locate the true beginning of the series or the energy flow. The beginning was an illusion; therefore, the ending must also be an illusion. When you explore energy, you drift into the exploration of infinity. Energy can change, but it can’t be destroyed. The soul can change, but it can’t be destroyed.
