Leo by Jina Wallwork
Leo is both a piece of artwork and a piece of instrumental music. It is part of a series that are portraits of loved ones. When creating any portrait there is always a question of how much an artist is depicting the person, as opposed to how much they’re portraying their connection to the person. In this instance the music and artwork became more about the connection between me and Leo. There are aspects of his personality that are lost within these works.
Included in this track is the Flauta figura humana 440 instrument that was created as part of the metaphor of sound exhibition. The exhibition, held at the Museo del Oro in San José, Costa Rica, displayed a collection of Pre-Columbian instruments. Charly Fariseo worked with these original instruments that dated from 500 BCE to 1550 CE. He sampled their sound and created instruments that could be used in Ableton Live. This gave musicians the opportunity to play these fascinating instruments.

The instrument I used in this track was the Flauta figura humana 440. This was a flute shaped like a human figure. I did alter the instrument so it doesn’t sound exactly the same as the original. I used another instrument in the track Darcy . Using sounds from history with modern techniques and equipment, this is something I find interesting because it speaks of the journey of sound and music.
